How do I resolve an issue where a Windows virtual machine cannot obtain an IP address?

Symptom

Running the following commands in the Windows command window to request an address:

C:\Users\1>  ipconfig /release
C:\Users\1>  ipconfig /renew

returns a DHCP server unreachable, connection timed out message, and the dnsmasq.log log shows the error not using configured address xxxx because it was previously.

Cause

IP address conflict.

Solution

• Change the IP address of the Windows virtual machine. DHCP can then obtain an IP address normally.
